Sophie rents a small apartment in Perth and shares it with Miso, a rescue kitten, and Wally, a young Cavoodle with opinions. She writes from the renter's side of pet gear: what fits through a narrow doorway, what survives a balcony summer, and what was a waste of a fortnight's groceries.
When our Cavoodle Wally arrived, a playpen turned our Perth rental into a safe space while we puppy proofed room by room. The pen bought us time to cover cables, lift shoes and teach him that the world wasn't a chew toy. Eight weeks in, it's still the calm centre of the house.
Renting means moving, and our fold-flat playpen has come with us twice across Perth without a fuss. Because it packs down to a slim panel stack, it lives in a cupboard between tenancies and sets up in minutes. For renters, portability matters as much as the pen itself.
Eight months of sharing a small Perth flat with a playpen: where it ended up living, how we saved our floors from it, and what we would buy differently next time.
After a year in our Perth apartment, the toy box told a blunt story. Of the thirty-odd things I bought for kitten Miso and Cavoodle Wally, barely half earned more than a week of real play. Here is the honest audit.
Living in a Perth apartment with a kitten and a Cavoodle means toy noise travels straight through the wall to the neighbours. These are the quiet toys and simple habits that keep Miso and Wally busy without a noise complaint.
When we flew our rescue cat Miso from Melbourne to Perth, the airline-approved carrier did more than hold her. Here is what it actually had to survive on travel day.

After twelve months and six beds bought for our Perth rental, only three earned a permanent spot. Here is the honest year-in-review of what lasted, what sagged, and what we quietly binned.
We burnt through five leads in five years before working out what mattered. A short flat lead, a long line and a hands-free setup covered nearly every situation our Cavoodle threw at us.
I swapped my regular lead for a waist-clip hands-free setup for a month of everyday life with Wally. Here is what helped, what surprised me, and the one habit I had to unlearn.
A lead left on the kitchen bench nearly ended a park trip. The cheap spare in our boot saved it, and it has now survived two Perth summers and one sandy winter.

We put a water-activated cooling vest on Wally during a 41-degree Perth heatwave to see if it was gear or gimmick. Here is the honest, soggy result.
Three winters of washing dog coats in a Perth rental taught me what ruins them: heat, softener and cheap powder detergent. Here is the routine that keeps ours working.
Our Beagle turned escaping into a sport, backing out of collars and slipping free of every harness we owned. A front-clip step-in design finally ended the routine, and the change came down to three small design details that made backwards wriggling impossible.
Deep-chested breeds like our neighbour's Staffy need more than a single girth number. We learned to measure the deep chest, watch the armpit clearance, and accept that one brand's medium is another's large before the fit finally sat right.
Two dogs, one hallway cupboard, and a harness that fitted neither of them. What actually changed when we added a second dog, and the order I would spend in next time.
Two cats, one rental window and one no-drill perch. Here's how we stopped the stand-offs, split the sun and kept the setup invisible at inspection time.

Wally our Cavoodle used to shake through every Perth summer storm. Here's the three-week plan that actually calmed him, and the gadgets that did nothing.

Two years, two rescue dogs and a habit of beach runs taught me that not every cover is built for real life. Here is what actually survived the salt, sand and claws, and what fell apart by month four.
After one too many wet-winter drives with two dogs, I built a layered back-seat setup on a renter's budget. A hammock, a washable mat and a door towel finally beat the mud.
