Winter Warmth & Summer Breeze: Year-Round Window Perch

When I first stuck a cat window hammock to the lounge room window, I assumed it was a summer toy. Perth summers are long and hot, and I figured Miso would use it to catch the breeze and then ignore it once the weather turned. A year later, the perch is still up and still her favourite spot in every season. It turns out a window perch is one of the few cat things that genuinely works all year — you just change how you use it. Here is how ours earns its place through both the cold and the heat.

In winter the window becomes a quiet source of warmth. On a sunny July morning the glass heats up gently, and Miso presses against it like it is her personal heater. A padded cover on the perch lifts her off the cold pane and traps a little of her own body heat, so she curls into a tight ball and sleeps for ages. The elevated spot also keeps her away from the tiled floor, which stays chilly, and away from Wally when he is in one of his zoomie moods.

I keep the blinds partway open so she gets the light without a draft, and I make sure the suction cups are firm so there is no wobble to wake her. Small touches, but they turn the perch into a proper winter nap zone.

How the same perch works in summer

Come summer, the window flips from heater to radiator, and that is where a breathable bed matters. I swap the plush cover for an open mesh one so air moves through and the coastal breeze actually reaches Miso. She sprawls flat, paws dangling, and lets the air do its work. The difference between the two covers is the difference between a cat who hops down restless and a cat who stays put for hours.

Because the mount is just suction cups, changing the cover takes a minute and needs no tools. That ease is exactly why the perch works year-round for a renter like me — I adapt it to the season instead of storing it away.

The in-between seasons

Autumn and spring in Perth are mild, and those are the months the perch feels almost magic. A soft breeze, a patch of sun, and a cat who cannot decide between a nap and bird-watching. I usually leave the mesh cover on through spring because the days warm up fast, and I switch to plush once the nights get crisp. There is no fixed date — I just watch Miso's behaviour and follow her lead.

Keeping it safe through the year

Seasonal use means the window gets cleaned and the cups re-pressed a little more often, which is no bad thing. Salt air near the coast leaves a faint film, and a clean pane helps the suction hold firmly no matter the weather. I wipe the glass, press each cup, and give the cover a wash every couple of weeks. None of it is hard, and it keeps the perch safe and pleasant.

I also check that the window I choose is not above a heater or in a stuffy spot. Steady, natural light beats a warm-but-stale corner every time for a cat who likes to doze.

Sizing and an honest word on our hammock

I want to be clear about fit so no one buys the wrong thing. Our standard twin-suction hammock is sourced through 1688 and is suited to small and medium cats up to about 15 kg. Miso uses hers daily through every season and it is perfect for her. I will not claim it holds a heavy large breed, because that would be untrue and unsafe. Why I kept it up all year

A year in, the window perch has paid for itself many times over. Miso is calmer, sleeps more deeply by the glass, and has a spot that is hers alone away from Wally. Warmth in winter, breeze in summer, and a happy kitten in between — that is a renter-friendly win I would happily repeat.
