Treat Toys That Buy You Twenty Quiet Minutes

Duke isn't mean — he's bored, and a bored Staffy is a freelance renovator. Before we found treat toys, my thongs were fair game. The shift came when I stopped giving him things to destroy and started giving him things to work out.

Why a treat toy works

It's not the treat, really. It's the job. A dog that's sniffing, licking and problem-solving is using the tired part of its brain, not the chew-the-lounge part. Twenty minutes of that and Duke's usually on the rug, not the remote.

Getting started without the mess

Smear a little peanut butter or yoghurt in, don't overfill, and freeze the rubber ones — that stretches it out and saves your shoes in summer. Rotate two or three types through the week so he doesn't get bored of the same puzzle. And supervise the first few goes; some dogs need to learn the toy isn't food.

None of this replaces a walk or your company. But as a boredom-buster between the interesting parts of the day, a good treat toy earns its spot in the toy box.

Frequently asked questions

Are treat toys safe for puppies?

Soft, puppy-rated versions only, and always supervised. Adult-strength rubber is too firm for growing teeth.

What do I put inside?

Peanut butter, plain yoghurt, wet food, or their own kibble. Skip xylitol — it's toxic to dogs.

My dog finishes in ten seconds — now what?

Freeze it, use a narrower opening, or move to a harder puzzle. Difficulty should grow with skill.

Can these replace a walk?

No. They're enrichment between exercise and company, not a substitute for either.

How do I clean them?

Rubber goes top rack of the dishwasher; mats and fabric wash in the machine. Air-dry fully.

Will a treat toy fix destructive behaviour?

It helps by giving a legal outlet, especially when paired with training. Severe cases deserve a vet or behaviourist.
