KONG, Coffee-Wood and the Chew That Lasts

After Duke split his third "tough" plush in a month, I stopped buying cute and started comparing materials. Three chew styles have earned permanent spots in our toy box: the classic rubber KONG-shaped toy, natural coffee-wood chews, and a natural-rubber bone. Each suits a different mood.

The genius of the KONG-shaped rubber is the hollow middle — stuff it with kibble and a smear of peanut butter, freeze it, and you've bought yourself half an hour of quiet. The coffee-wood chew was a surprise: it wears down slowly into soft fibres rather than splintering like sticks, and Duke treats it like a long job rather than a quick destruction. It's become the car-trip pacifier.

One honest note: natural doesn't mean indestructible either. Wood chews retire when they splinter, rubber when it cracks. The difference is you'll get months, not minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What can I stuff a KONG-style toy with?

Kibble, peanut butter (xylitol-free), plain yoghurt, wet food — freezing stretches the fun.

Are wood chews safe for dogs?

Coffee-wood chews are made for gnawing and wear to soft fibres. Replace when splintering.

Which colour KONG-style rubber is toughest?

Black/extreme-rated rubber is the firmest; red is standard; puppy versions are softest.

How long should a chew last?

Months for quality rubber or wood with a power chewer — minutes for plush.

Can I leave my dog with a stuffed chew toy?

Most dogs settle well with one; know your dog and check the toy after each session.
