Catnip, Silvervine or Plain Boredom? What Actually Gets a Cat Playing
People are always surprised when I tell them catnip doesn't work on every cat. Roughly a third of cats carry no response to it at all — genetics, not personality. My own boy rolls on a catnip mouse like it owes him money; his sister walks straight past it. So if a "catnip toy" has flopped in your house, the toy wasn't the problem.
Three ways to spice up a toy
Catnip is the classic — dried leaves sewn into kickers and mice, and the response (rolling, drooling, bliss) fades after ten minutes or so. Silvervine is the newer arrival: a natural plant that seems to catch cats catnip misses, including many of the non-responders. Then there's plain novelty — a toy that crinkles or rolls can grip a cat with no herbs at all.

The trick nobody mentions is rotation. Cats habituate fast — a toy that thrilled them Monday is furniture by Friday. I keep a biscuit tin of catnip toys in the cupboard and swap them fortnightly; the "new" toy lands every time.
